Dr. Claudia Pillow debunks the myth that breakfast and protein bars are “healthy” food, even if they are organic and gluten-free. Read more about what these bars actually contain and what’s in Hail Merry grawnola.
Do you know what Maltitol is? It could be in your protein bar. Maltitol is a hydrogenated sugar alcohol carbohydrate (derived either from corn or wheat) that is converted to glucose in the liver, elevating blood sugar levels and may upset digestion in some people. Does the word hydrogenated cause you alarm? It should- hydrogenated oils, otherwise known as trans fats, are now considered very unhealthy. Maltitol is a hydrogenated sugar promoted to dieters as healthy because it has no calories and has a slightly lower glycemic index than table sugar. Diabetics beware, it will still elevate blood sugar! Unfortunately, too many people are eating these highly refined bars as meal replacements, but they cause inflammation in the gut and set the stage for all sorts of chronic immune system conditions like allergies, headaches, stiffness in the joints and bloating. And everyone seems to be on the “healthy” bar promotion bandwagon including – Lance Armstrong, Elizabeth Hasselbeck, even Dr. Sears of the famous Zone Diet.
Fabfitfun.com, Guiliana Rancic’s blog published a 2011 breakfast bar “smackdown” of their favorite “nutritious” bars. Would you consider high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, ethanol, and soy protein isolates healthy or nutritious? Probably not, but foods with these ingredients are being promoted under the “get healthy” section. These ingredients are also highly refined processed food that cause inflammation, create acidity in the body and replace meals centered on whole foods full of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and antioxidants. Why do most bars add fiber and synthesized vitamins and minerals? Because they don’t occur naturally in the product and to make added fiber like chicory taste good, sugar needs to be added. Some bars have more than 12 grams of sugar (equal to one tablespoon)! What is healthy or nutritious about that?
